TELEFUNKEN MUSIKUS 5SV

TELEFUNKEN MUSIKUS 5SV

The Telefunken Musikus 5SV is one of the best portable record players built in Germany between 1960-1961.
The mechanical part is comprised of a robust Telefunken belt record player.
The record player is equipped with automatic antiskating set at the factory. It can play discs at 16/33/45/78 rpm.
It is not automatic for which the mechanics are very simple, robust and silent.
It can assemble monophonic or stereo stylus.
The electronics are established from an ECL82 polarized in A-Class.
The triode section of the ECL82 is used as a preamplifier. Between the preamplifier stage and the final stage there are separate tone controls for acute and bass.
Interestingly, the physiological control of the volume consists in three separate levels which intervenes in succession to the volume decreasing.
That physiological control is applied to both potentiometer sections. Another important feature is the ability to connect to an external amplifier, with its loudspeaker, to listen in stereophonic mode.
The traditional use is to connect the output of this record player to the input of a radio.
It is enough to turn the stylus and the Stereo/Mono switch to the Stereo position.
In this way, one channel will be audible from the loudspeaker of the portable record player, the other channel will be audible from the radio’s loudspeaker.
Activating the volume knob of the portable record player, it will act simultaneously on both channels.
The tone controls of the two devices remain separate and independent.
The listening in Mono does not require any additional equipment.

The sound is typical, substantial, sweet and obviously relaxing.
The acute tones are brilliant and the bass is quite quietly present …..within the limits imposed by the laws of physics.

A beautiful portable stereo player with the final stage “Single Ended” in A-Class, enclosed in very refined furniture.
An object which you can enjoy the transmissions of times past.

HISTORY

1903 To prevent the English Marconi Company from having a monopoly on wireless transmissions,,Kaiser Wilhelm II orders the company AEG and Siemens to set up a joint venture to develop wireless telegraphy in Germany. It was established under the name of Gesellschaft für drahtlose Telegrafen mbH.

1923 The company name is changed to Firmierung in Telefunken, Gesellschaft für drahtlose Telegrafen mbH. Abbreviated as Telefunken, where Tele means Telegraph and Funken means "Lightning" in the sense of being fast and immediate.

1930 Production gradually moves from military and Government equipment to the production of consumer appliances. During this period, Telefunken enters the market of radio-television, recorders and etching of records.

1930 As radio transmissions are now needed not only to transmit telegraph messages, but also true music and speech broadcasts, it becomes necessary to introduce the concept of sound compression, to avoid continual volume level changes of the radio. Telefunken designs and produces the U3, the first compressor for transmitting stations in the world,. TheU73b, as seen in the picture, represents the evolution of previous models—it allows you to change the compression level, the release times and the attack times.

1941 All Telefunken’s actions are transferred to AEG, which effectively becomes the sole owner of the trademark Telefunken, its factories and patents.

1948 Germany is not invited to the Copenhagen Conference, where the division of Medium and Short Wave radio frequencies of Central Europe is decided. The war has just ended, and officially Germany isn't considered as a technologically important nation. Because of this, Germany decides to develop FM broadcasts even if the quality of the transmissions is considerably higher than those in the AM. At this time, Telefunken develops the V72 microphone/amplification system and its evolutions, intended to be used in all German broadcasters and most European ones too, as well as at the most important recording studios, such as EMI, Decca, Telefunken, etc.

1955 The company becomes Telefunken GmbH.

1967 Telefunken is joined with AEG and the company becomes ‘’AEG-Telefunken’’.

1970 Poor management causes the company to lose market shares. AEG begins to outsource entire business segments and make constant rearrangements.

1985 Daimler-Benz AG buys what remains of AEG-Telefunken.

1996 The name Telefunken is cleared and all activities related to audio products stop.

Today The company name has been renewed in Telefunken Holding AG. Telefunken and its use worldwide are responsible for the name. In United States Telefunken USA buys the rights to build and market worldwide original microphones and some audio equipment under the brand Telefunken Elektroakustik.
The original company that helped spread the music throughout the world doesn’t exist anymore.

LOUDSPEAKER

The loudspeaker of this device is very interesting.
Since it has been placed on the top of the lid of the cabinet, it has been necessary to contain the depth.
To do this, the magnet and the reel have been moved to the front of the speaker, in front of the cone.
The cone curvature is also minimized.
With these clever solutions the depth has been limited to a few inches.
The frequency response of a loudspeaker with the profile is shifted to the acute, which is really brilliant.
The cabinet built on the lid, allows the low range to be emphasized, so at the end the frequency response is rather linear.

TONE CONTROLS

Another important feature, that reveals the class of this device, is the tone control circuit, which consists of two separate sections for high and low frequencies.

Somewhat different to the circuits usually used in German production, here the controls are independent from the volume control position.

These controls act naturally only on the internal amplifier, not on that additional amplifier.

Telefunken Musikus 5SV
Telefunken Musikus 5SV

SOCKET FOR EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER

In the photo, on the left you can see the 3 poles DIN socket, to which it is possible to connect an additional amplifier, as specified in the presentation of the device.

When the switch is in the Mono position (a circle) on both amplifiers the internal one and the additional one, the same signal arrives.

When the switch is in the Stereo position (two circles) to the two amplifiers the signal arrives separately in the two channels. This is controlled by the volume potentiometer which consists of two equal sections.

MAIN CONTROLS

Telefunken Musikus 5SV

The first command you can see to the left is the voltage changer. It should only be used at the beginning to adjust the voltage of the record players’ operation to that of the network.
Then, it must no longer be touched.
The second command is the control of low tones of the internal amplifier, to follow the potentiometer of the volume (of both channels)(di entrambi i canali)

and finally, the acute tones control knob.
Above you can see the big knob of the speed control of the record player.
At the end, the Mono/Stereo switch and the output for an additional amplifier.

Grundig 3035 3D Klang

Grundig 3035 3D Klang

Grundig 3035 3D Klang is a device classified as medium class of Grundig.
Like some other devices of the 3xxx serie, this one is also particularly interesting.
The thing about this radio that surprised me is the extraordinary reproduction of the spoken parts.
The music is well reproduced but the transmissions where the presence of the speaker is dominant are really impressive.
The voice is present, well balanced and preponderant. All shades, including speaker faults or habits are understandable.
In my opinion, this device is appropriate to the “typical radio listener”, turning on the radio in the morning, turning it off in the evening and listening without temporal continuity to radio commentary, interviews and music.

The Output stage is a classic A-Class with an EL84 valve as final and the triode section of the EABC80 valve as a preamplifier.
The device is equipped with 4 loudspeakers, one of which is an electrostatic frontal tweeter.

At the back of the radio, there is a visible socket where it is possible to connect a remote command. It is possible to turn on the device, adjust the volume and insert some predefined equalizations.
All of this is certainly not standard equipment for middle class devices, but for far superior devices.

The cabinet is important for its size, which guarantees a split between frontal and posterior emissions of the loudspeaker.
The loudspeakers of these radios have been mounted in a particular configuration “quiet open Baffle” whereby a big separation surface is very important for an efficient reproduction of bass notes.
The sound is substantial but the strong point of the radio is the clarity of reproduction of solo instruments and of the voice.

Rotating ferrite antenna for AM

grundig 3035W/3D

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tones control system is very efficient. Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.
A detail specific for “extreme” technical radios lovers: the high-tone control knob is linked to two thin ropes. One of them is for the position indicator of the control itself, whereas the other changes the position of the ferrite in the MF transformers modifying the inclination of the transformer’s curve.
By doing so high tones were attenuated/accentuated even before getting to the BF stage. Tone control was usually put into effect with the potentiometer on the tension amplifier stage

AERIALS

Inside the cabinet there is a dipole for FM reception and a ferrite rotating aerial for AM reception.
Ferrite aerial can be rotated from the outside to achieve a perfect tuning of the device in the AM.
In this picture see the rotation mechanism and the position indicator of the aerial.
The reception sensitivity with internal aerials is very good. This unit was in fact produced in a period when there were not many radio stations and those available fairly apart from each others.
Using an external aerial sensitivity is further increased.

Grundig 3035W/3D

TUNING CONTROL

The tuning system is another gem.
The unit is equipped with mechanisms for keeping separate the AM and FM bands.
The tuning knob is single but a selector switch commutes into cable systems (all in steel) and pulleys separated depending on the band.
The movement is transferred to both mechanisms with a system of pulleys and separated gears.

In this way, it is possible to listen to a clean sound from whatever position you listen.
Of course, this radio should not be placed in a bookcase or in furniture that covers the side surfaces.

GRUNDIG 4010W

Produced in 1952 and 1953, the Grundig 4010W was one of the high quality models of the manufacturer, and, of course, of the entire German production.

VIntage Radio Cabinet

Let’s start by describing the cabinet.
The dimensions are obviously important. The device does not want to pass by unnoticed. The wood veining is deliberately pronounced.
The furniture is enriched by further refinement, to clear lines that slim down the sides and the front are not drawn. These are authentic inlays of light wood.
Today, it is inconceivable to do such a thing, both for cost and for mastery.

In Grundig 40101W the band of the Short Waves is divided into three autonomous sections:

SW1 -  50,8 to 35 mt (5,9 - 8,6 MHz)
SW2 - 35 to 24 mt (8,6 - 12,5 MHz)
SW3 - 24 to 16,7 mt (12,5 - 18 MHz)

In this way, the tuning on the bands is very accurate because each band has the entire extension of all the musical scale.
In the devices produced in the following years, the Band of the Short Waves were compressed into a single musical scale.
The Medium Waves are also divided into three sections:

MW1 - 585 to 318 mt (515 - 945 kHz)
MW2 - 321 to 185 mt (935 - 1620 kHz)

Moreover, the memorization of one Medium Wave station is planned. Pressing the ORT-S button, the head of a threaded plank appears, allows the button to be rotated and tune into a favourite station.
Each time that you press the ORT-S button, the radio will tune in to the memorized station.
The FM Band ranges from 87.5 to 100 MHz. The installation of Bluetooth is highly recommended on this radio.

The amplifier section consists in a classic EABC80 tube as a preamplifier. It is equipped from controls of the high and low tones.
The output stage is a powerful EL12 polarized to operate in A-Class.
It is provided with a negative feedback system, elaborated for linearize the response in the frequency of the output stage.
However, the circuit does not introduce a high feedback factor, so the sound remains very natural.
The output transformer is well dimensioned, so it is impossible to have saturation effects.

The result of all these expensive technical solutions allows a high quality of the sound.
This was another excellent realization of the Grundig engineers.

TUNING CONTROL

For both AM and FM bands the tuning system is unique.
The single variable capacitor is divided into 4 sections, two for AM and two for FM.
Each section is used respectively for the RF amplifier and the oscillator.
The mechanism is very simple and robust. It has the disadvantage of being a unique command for all bands.

TUNING INDICATOR

Grundig 4010W

BAND INDICATOR

With this beautiful type of keyboard, called "piano", you cannot understand which band key is pressed and which band is being listened to.
For this reason, each button has an indicator that changes color when the relative key is selected.

LOUDSPEAKERS

There are two loudspeakers.
This couple of loudspeakers are very oversized.
In fact, it is the same couple used in the 5010 models, that assembles two EL12 by push-pull mode.
The main wide band measures 13.8 in of width for 7.9 in of height. It covers a part of the radio’s width ..... that is so big.
Grundig produce both loudspeakers.
A very interesting feature is that they are equipped with an adjustable basket.
This allows me to centre the cone movement with respect to the magnetic system.

The mid-tweeter has an oversized magnet. It has to tolerate considerable power peaks because it is cut very low.
The acute are unexpectedly crystalline whilst remaining very sweet.

The cones are cellulose treated and they are to this day in perfect condition, without any deformation or structural failure.
Objects built when they had to last “at least” the life time of the owner.

NORDMENDE STEREO STEUERGERAT 3007

NORDMENDE STEREO STEUERGERAT 3007

Finally we do not find passive correction or equalization filters on a machine, and this goes to advantage response linearity and signal transfer speed.

I put this note at the beginning to highlight the main characteristic of the NORDMENDE STEREO STEUERGERAT 3007, say, the extreme response linearity.
The power of the RMS output goes around 9W per channel, and its enough to pilot medium dimension and efficiency speakers.
Not having appearently a color of its own, this machine leaves musicality to the loudspeakers, that will have to be chosen with care.
This is in my opinion the harder side, but at the same time intriguing, of the placing of this Nordmende.

Very easy to use and very compact, represents a stylistc line at the top those years in Europe.
Shortly the Japanese will come with their professional-looking machines...talking about the appearence.

The cabinet is very beautiful and opaque-varnished.
The care and the precision by Nordmende in its production are notorious. The quality of the components is known over all by german collectors.

I personally prefere the “naked” machine.
Aesthetically it reminds me of the McIntosh look (don't blame me the evaluators of the legendary Chambers Street's company)
The deisgn is less heavy and immediately becomes current and this benefits the thermic balance increasing the functioning stability and the duration.
If I would have to do a tweaking and not a refurbishment, I'd protect the machine with a black shiny grid of the right dimension. I'm convinced that the result would be very interesting.

Nordmende factory

HISTORY

In 1923 Otto Hermann Mende founded Radio H. Mende & Co. in Dresden. After the bombing of the factory in 1945, Martin Mende (son of the founder) created a new company in Bremen, the "North German Mende Broadcast GmbH" whose name was later changed into NORDMENDE.

In the 50s and 60s it became one of the most prestigious German TV and radios manufacturer.

In the 70s the televisions by NORDMENDE became famous for their frames, cards and for the rigorous testing and quality controls carried out on their finished products. Unfortunately, the high cost involved in such detailed quality determined a competitive disadvantage when the price of color television began to fall.

In 1977 the majority of the shares was sold to the French Thomson. The following year, the family sold the remaining shares. In 1980, the factories of Bremen was closed, NORDMENDE becoming purely a trademark of Thomson.

The use of this expensive material ensures the grip of the contacts even with high temperatures and without spurious capacities and and interferences thanks to the best dielectric characteristics of the ceramic compared to other cheaper materials usually used in commercial devices.

Inside the cabinet there is a dipole for FM reception and a ferrite aerial for AM reception.

The reception sensitivity with internal aerials is very good.
This unit was in fact produced in a period when there were not many radio stations and those available fairly apart from each others.

Using an external aerial sensitivity is further increased.

SEPARATED TUNING CONTROL BETWEEN AM AND FM

The tuning system is interesting and different than other devices made in Germany.

The device is equipped with separate tuning mechanisms for AM and FM bands.
There are two tuning knobs, separate but coaxial, with cable and pulley systems separated depending on the band. This type of tuning has a very strong mechanics.

Regarding maintenance, cleaning and lubricating once every 10 to 15 years is sufficient.

KÖRTING NECKERMANN STEREO STEUERGERÄT 821/80

Korting Neckermann Stereo Steuergerät 821/80 has an elegant line and its compact dimensions in relation with other sinto amplifier of that period make this machine easily placeable in modern and minimalistc environments.

Its the most prestigious device produced by Körting-Neckermann in those years. Körting became famous for its excellent (and expensive) TVs and then the company had been absorbed, like many other german companies, by foreign assets, in this case Slovenian to produce various electronic devices.

The use of this machine is very simple, being it intentionally not equipped of filters compensations automations or others. A few but very efficient controls: treble, bass, volume, balance and obviously the tuning changes.
In particular, the tone control (Baxandall) is extremely efficient. It is the same kind of control still used nowadays in the high fidelity amplifiers.

Korting-Neckermann 821-80

The balance has been obtained with a particular circuital solution, the control indeed has been placed after the output transformer. You get a balance control that can be very precisely calibrated. However, even turning the knob all on one side, the channel never reaches the Zero.

TUBESOUND ENHANCEMENT

- Separate loudspeakers - Using separate loudspeakers is an important option for stereo receivers. This allows you to couple the receiver to speakers best suited to particular space, design or acoustic performance requirements. The most suitable loudspeakers are analysed later, under loudspeakers.

- Stereo Decoder - The device has an integrated Stereo Decoder. This allows you to listen to stations that use this transmissions system in stereo. Many stereo receivers are not equipped with a Multiplexer so they work in stereo only when you select the record player’s /Recorder/Aux input . Such receivers, in listening to the radio, send the same signal to both channels, so listening is monaural. This is not the case with the Concertino 2380, which is totally beyond stereo.

- Built-in Bluetooth receiver - This unit can be equipped with a BLUETOOTH receiver powered directly from the device. That makes it possible to use the amplifier from any digital device, IPAD, Smartphone, or sophisticated multimedia station. You can listen to your wireless Web Stations or favorite music around the room. On request, we can also mount a Wireless Receiver.

- Multi Platform connections - Along with the device, we can also provides you an impedance adapter cable to connect any digital source, such as iphone, smartphone, computer, CD player, etc. This purpose-built cable adapts different impedances of modern digital equipment. Also the two stereo channels are collected into a single flow without increasing the load input unit.

BLAUPUNKT HIFI STEUERGERÄT 23450

BLAUPUNKT HIFI STEUERGERÄT 23450

BLAUPUNKT HIFI STEUERGERÄT 23450 is the device ever produced by Blaupunkt, that most of all gets close to my “phonic” taste.

Steuergerät means Control Electronic Unit.
The unit encloses the tuner and the amplifier, both stereophonics. You can connect to it a turntable, a CD/DVD player or any other source of sound.
What fascinated me about this device is not its power (4W produced by a single-ended ECL86) but its depth, its silkiness and the precision of the riproduced sound.
The ECL86 musicality is out of question.
Its a fact that in the “esoteric” websites, there are loads of ECL86 vs EL84 threads still today.
I matched this machine with a couple of wonderful Goodmans X, big sisters of the very-well-known Maxim.
The efficiency of these boxes its enough to make the Blaupunkt sound well. Very well.
I tried to match it to another couple of boxes among the ones I prefere: the box 450 from Grundig. But the result has not been likewise satisfying.
The Blaupunkt product line gets close to the one from other producers of that time: Graetz, Nordmende. One of the last wood/glass devices.
The japanese little monsters with anodized alluminium face and retroaction rate of 85% are about to appear in the market.
Again a couple of words about the Goodmans X that would deserve a page of the website for themselves.
Among the best english creations, produced for the very demanding german market, they mount speakers made of fusion-obtained Alnico, the best kind of Alnico.
The membranes are in very high quality rubber, and indeed they kept in perfect condition until today.
The loudspeakers choice is very important to add value to this and other similar machine of that time.
With the wrong loudspeakers, single-ended finals will just make you yawn. Match them with a couple of loudspeakers of this class, with this efficiency and this super-high quality.
The Rogers are probably among the best vintage speakers you can imagine for his levels of power.
The best website about the Goodmans Maxim is this "click here".

EXTERNAL LOUDSPEAKERS

As any modern sinto-amplifier, the unit is not provided with speakers in the inside of the cabinet: it would be impossible to obtain something that could call itself “Hi-Fi”.

I already described the pleasure that these beautiful and rare speakers give, but I can't show the huge magnets and the accurate made-in-england manufacturing because they are sealed, on the front and on the back, almost impossible to disassemble.
But we don't need to. They're perfect.

STEREO MPX DECODER

The radio is equipped with a tube Stereo-Decoder, that means it is a real stereo, not like most other vintage radio that used to be mono in the radio FM and stereo sections only because of the double final section. To be clear, the record player could be played in stereo, but the radio only in mono.

The receiving sensitivity with internal antennas is very good.

FM SECTION

The FM section is made of the super-tested ECC85 with the configuration Amplifier RF/Ocillator-mixer.

This sections is not yet hit by the problems that characterized the devices of that time, in particular the Stereomeister 3000 by Grundig, that is, the instability to maintain the tune.
The FM section is controlled by a dedicated knob, separated from the AM section.
The mechanical complexity of this solution is minimal, increasing hugely the system reliability.

LISTENING IMPRESSIONS

I premise that I am not an audiophile expert and so these impressions have only the value of personal opinions.
The Radio Section is perfect, stable, with a perfect selectivity even today and with an easy tuning of the radio stations, due to the long scale.
Other competitor devices Graetz Stereo Unit 250 or Grundig Stereomeister 3000 had 5/6 pre-selectable and savable stations. On the Stereomeister this preciosity was a big source of problems.

My test benches since time are two, always the same ones: Hosianna Mantra, the masterpiece by Popol Vuh and the 6 Unaccompained Cello Suites by Bach, played, or better interpreded by Yo-Yo Ma.

The CD reader is a Grundig CD35, a good machine.

Describing in writing how these pieces are reproduced by this system requires a big effort of imagination, even by who's reading.
Roundness, sweetness, contained basses, trebles never straining.
The listening struggle is the most distant sensation from the match Blaupunkt/Goodmans. It never comes.
The only unpleasant sensation is...when it's late and you have to interrupt the listening, because tomorrow is another working day.

For further information I have to say that this Blaupunkt is not the ideal machine to listen to the Nirvana... but at that time they weren't there!

Grundig 3012

GRUNDIG 3012

The Grundig 3012 is a very special device called friendly "The bufferfly" because the loudspeakers position. The classification of Grundig devices is as follows:

Serie 1 xxx – Economic Class (ie.1060)
Serie 2 xxx – Economic - Medium Class (ie.2035)
Serie 3 xxx – Average Class (ie.3012)
Serie 4 xxx – Medium – High Class (ie.4035)
Serie 5 xxx - High Class (ie.5010)
Serie 6 xxx – Very High Class (ie.6099)

The Grundig 3012 belongs to the Medium Class but it has some features of the Upper Class.
Firstly, the final tube is a powerful EL12, normally used on Serie 5 devices.

The EL12 is a large pentode that delivers until 8W in A- Class.
The output transformer is a very large, almost like the power transformers in a normal radio, so it hardly goes into saturation.

Another important feature is the two elliptical loudspeakers.
Together, they can reproduce very low notes. Being smaller, they are faster and for this reason the bass is very limited, pleasant and modern.

Finally, the central tweeter and the symmetrical arrangement of the two broadband loudspeakers simulate a sound emitting point source. In this way, it is possible to get a remarkable “soundstage” effect and great depth of environment.

The cabinet of the radio is very beautiful and contains a surprise.
The clear frames that you can see on the sides are not painted, but they are inlaid.
All of these architectural choices do not belong to a Medium Class device, in fact Grundig 3012 is not a device of that class.

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tones control system is very efficient. Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.
Interesting the high-tone control knob linked to two thin ropes. One of them is for the position indicator of the control itself, whereas the other changes the position of the ferrite in the MF transformers modifying the inclination of the transformer’s curve.
By doing so high tones were attenuated/accentuated even before getting to the BF stage. Tone control was usually put into effect with the potentiometer on the voltage amplifier stage

AERIALS

Inside the cabinet there is a dipole for FM reception.
One arm of the dipole is also used for receiving AM bands.
Listening FM band the reception sensitivity with internal aerials is very good.
For AM bands using an external antenna the sensitivity is good.
The picture shows the dipole fixed internally to the cabinet.

LOUDSPEAKERS

There are three speakers, but what matters most about this unit is their arrangement.
They are arranged to reproduce the sound as if it came from a point source, like in a single speaker.
The acoustic result is extremely enjoyable, and the rebuilding of the scene is realistic. You find the depth and the space.
The bass is very deep and fast, and the acute are balanced, thanks to the help of the central electrostatic tweeter.
I do not understand why this configuration was not re-proposed even in the most expensive models. Maybe just to keep costs down.

Braun RCS9

The best Tube receiver built by BRAUN.
Same receiver you find on model with turntable Atelier 2 and 3.

This receiver section represents the utmost of Braun tube production. It belongs to the class of biggest German receivers such as Telefunken Opus 2550, Nordmende 3004, Graetz Stereo Unit 250, the Saba Studio I etc.

Main feauture of this device is the simplification of electric circuits (today is pretty self-explanatory, but in 1961 it was considered a remarkable feature). Differently from other devices the Braun’s Negative Feedback is reduced to a single resistance (highlighted in red) aiming at a low distorsion and an excellent musical transparency.

The sounds control circuit is canonical: a very efficient and balanced Baxandall circuit (highlighted in yellow). It allows the sound control without changing the signal’s phase according to potentiometers.

The Loudness circuit (highlighted in green) is extremely simple and studies for a correct emphasis of low frequencies. Sound quality is as good as Telefunken’s, Nordmende’s, grundig's and Graetz’s of the same level, more refinement maybe.. You will definitely need high-efficiency loudspeakers. This enhanced device is valuable for its breathtaking design and for its performance both.

TUBESOUND IMPROVEMENT

- FM frequency range widened from to 88 up to 104 MHz - The tube radios produced in Germany in the years 50/60 are famous worldwide for their excellent sound quality, the beauty of their furniture, their strength and for their construction standards without compromise. Unfortunately the FM band extending from 87.5 to 100 MHz for which are scarcely usable in most cases. After careful study and a lot of tests we were able to obtain a frequency range by some units from 88 to 104 MHz. We have also reconstructed a display exactly identical to the original, made with the same materials and the same techniques, but with the new frequency range. The result is perfect. An original device, but with the ability to listen most stations in any country.

- Improved amplifier - New high quality Metal Film resistors take a place of the noisy old carbon composite resistors. The old capacitors are completely renewed with very low parasitic losses (ESR). Great attention in the direction of assembly of the components has been used. All the improvements are substantial.

- Ultra noiseless MPX decoder - A MPX decoder was introduced between RF and BF stages. Usually it lack. It's a decoder developed specifically for this unit by a German engineer I work with. The noise level introduced is very low. Crosstalk is perfectly calibrated. With correct receiving conditions the result is an accurate reconstruction of the sound stage.

- Bluetooth receiver embed - The unit is equipped with a BLUETOOTH receiver powered directly by the receiver power supply. This makes it possible to control the amplifier from any external digital device as an IPAD, a Smartphone, or a sophisticated multimedia station. So you can hear your preferred web station or your lossesless file without cables on the room. Wireless Receiver can be equipped upon requests.

BAUHAUS AND 60's

The 1961 is one of those "crossroads" years of the History of Twentieth Century. That year's events will leave a deep mark - for better or for worse - in Europe. The international context has deeply changed form the post-war years. The Nations that allied to defeat the Nazi Germany are by now opposed militarily and ideologically. From the beginning of the year the Cold War influences the whole World. The threat of a new Global War appears at this point inevitable, and the assumptions are all there. In this gloomy climate, a series of crucial events for mankind comes in succession.

In Germany, in particular, 1961 is recalled as "The year of the wall". In few days the Authorities of the German Democratic Republic ordered the construction of a double layered wall and an armed surveillance system to divide East Berlin form the western sectors. Berlin Wall becomes the symbol of a contrast between East and West that gradually involves the whole World, shortly afterwords bringing it to the brink of a nuclear catastrophe with the Cuban crisis two years later.

The contrasting two superpowers involves all sectors of the economic and political life. Scientific research paves the way to the conquest of Space, opening another contest front between USA and USSR to reach the Space. On April 12th, 1961 Yuri Gagarin with the Vostok 1 is the first human being to travel into Space and orbit around the Earth. the United States of America have to acknowledge the huge leap ahead of the technological development of Soviet Union.

It's the intellectuals turn to build bridges between the counter posed parts. 1961 is sure enough an extraordinary year also for Culture: Ivo Andric is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature; the debate between Positivism and Dialectical materialism divides the Frankfurt School. Karl Popper and Theodor Adorno discuss on the Scientific Research Methodology and give birth to the "Positivismusstreit", namely the clash between Positivism and Dialectical materialism that will influence the future Epistemological debate. The philosophical debate is as such originated by the different ideological visions of Marxism and Positivism. Hemingway commits suicide and Primo Levi writes "La tregua/The Truce", an account of a return to the world of the Living after the hell of Lagers.

The 1961 is moreover the Economic Boom year and the re-construction of the Europe that had been destroyed during the Second World War -that went on during the '50s - forms the paving ground of an unprecedented economic growth period. The welfare society arises, and Germany is in the front line.

German culture rediscovers Weimar. and the representatives of the artistic and theatrical avantgarde, such as Brecht. Walter Gropius, founder in 1919 of the revolutionary tendency of Bauhaus Architecture, establishes in Darmstad the Bauhaus Archive. The Bauhaus, created in 1919, and permanently snapped off with the coming to power of Hitler, is rediscovered in the early '60s by the new generation grown in the harsh postwar period. The rediscovering of the essential lines of the concept of the great German architect is, for the architects of the '60s an Epiphany. The hose and the furniture become the final product of a mental, planning and practical process that combines together technique, ergonomics, simplicity in an totally innovative stylistic merger.

New building techniques concepts enter into the big firms trough by hiring designers, new profession that starts influencing the production lines. With thins new approach the product-objects that are sold are to be seen in a “total” product vision, that is a synthesis of technique and concept. The modern idea of Design as we currently mean it is born.

Braun is one of the first Firms that decides to invest in Design. The best designer was Dieter Rams, who was on apprentice with Otto Apel (Apel was for ten years the assistant of Albert Speer, Hitler's architect, and following that became the Ministry for Armaments and War Production of the Reich. After the war he was hired by the Americans to modernize the construction industry techniques in the USA). Rams started a stylistic research work that brought him to develop the concept of “ergonomic essentiality”, summarized in his aphorism "Weniger, aber besser", that is “Less, but better” or in a wider sense “Less, as long as better”.The influences of the Bauhaus are clear in his works, particularly Peter Keler works, from which he took the concepts of “spatiality” and “linearity” of works as "Wiege (Cradle)", 1922 translating the into simple and elegant lines.

Dieter Rams’ 10 principles of good design

Good Design is Innovative - The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted.
Good Design Makes a Product Useful - A product is bought to be used. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product.
Good Design is Aesthetic - The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products are used every day and have an effect on people and their well-being.
Good Design Makes a Product Understandable - It clarifies the product’s structure.
Good Design is Unobtrusive Products - fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art.
Good Design is Honest - It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.
Good Design is Long-lasting - It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated.
Good Design Is Thorough Down to the Last Detail - Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.
Good Design is Environmentally Friendly - Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment.
Good Design is as Little Design as Possible - Less, but better. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

TONE CONTROL

The tone control system use Baxandall circuits as described in the initial comments.
The network is logarithmic and also potentiometers, as in the original Baxandall project.
With this circuit the improved symmetry of response curves is worth it.

SABA FREIBURG STUDIO A

SABA FREIBURG STUDIO A

Saba Freiburg Studio A is the utmost expression of German production concerning the tube receivers equipped with automatic search.
None of the German receivers can give more and none have all of the features and performance of the Saba Frieburg Studio A.

Electronically, it is the same machine’s body used in the Saba Frieburg 14. Regarding this technical description you can refer to their page, but the possibilities of usage are different.

The first advantage – without loudspeakers, the furniture is more compact and is more easily arranged in any given space.
The second advantage – it is possible to join the device with compatible loudspeakers and place them in the most appropriate position for ideal listening.

The range of possibilities that receivers offer, as for example, the Saba Frieburg Studio A are very important. If used well, they can radically change the sound of a system.
As part of this particular review, I would strongly recommend consideration is given to the following advice to enhance the listening experience:

1- Do not place the electronics between the two loudspeakers.

In the pictures the receiver is in the middle of the two loudspeakers, are exclusively for photographic needs.
In a real configuration it must be placed on one side.
Listening to music is a total experience and captivates other senses beyond hearing. Try to listen to a track in the dark and then listen to the same track in the light in your home. Also, listen to the same track used as a soundtrack watching a film. Lastly, try to listen to the same track once more watching the video of the concert.
In all these cases, and in many other situations, the brain will detect and develop sound in different ways. It will create different feelings even though we are listening to the same track.
Placing the electronics in the middle of the loudspeakers distorts our perception of the sound.
Also pay attention to the mechanical resonance of the equipment placed in the centre of the loudspeakers.

None of the tube receivers, produced in Germany, could give more.

HISTORY

SABA is the acronym for Schawarzwälder-Apparate-Bau-Anstalt meaning engineering institute of Technological appliances of the Black Forest.

The company was founded back in 1835 by Joseph Benedikt with the initial name of Jockele-Uhren, but only in 1923 the production of radio devices began and the company went under the name of SABA.
Toward the end of the 20s SABA became famous with the well-known S35 and in the following years it became the second German producer after Telefunken. During the war SABA produced military equipment and in 1945 the company was completely destroyed by a bombing.
In 1947 the production of radio devices began again and SABA distinguished itself immediately for ist avant-garde and high- quality production.

hey also began to produce TVs (the first PAL color TV is a SABA), house appliances and medical equipment. Many Italians used to work there. The Alnico Greencone loudspeakers became popular for their linearity, power handling, constant impendence that would be employed in each Hi-Fi devices of that time.

The radio devices with motorized tuning became popular as well and SABA became the representative German brand meaning quality, reliability and detailed precision. In the 1970s the decline began. According to specialized magazines of that time not having a Japanese device at that time meant not having Hi-Fi. In the 80s Thompson took over SABA. In the 90s the other way around, having a Japanese device of the 70s meant not having Hi-Fi. They found out that they functioned with a 96% counterreaction and that a device with 0.001 db from 1 to 100 KHz extension did not necessarily sound good.

We do not trust our ears and we do trust what other people say not necessarily with a good purpose.
2007: due to insolvency SABA disappeared from the TLC (Chinese) and Thompson (French) joint venture, and SABA ceased to exist.

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tone control system is really efficient. Above the tone control knob you can find a small window that progressively lights up indicating the emphasis given to the band.

BANDBREITE SCHALTBAR

The correction system of the frequency response is composed of one button, MUSIK/SPRACHE.
They allow the emphasis of high and low tones while listening to music and of medium tones while listening to spoken programs.

AERIALS

Rotating ferrite curve with lightened window indicating its position.
The ferrite curve can be rotated through a big knob which is coaxial to the volume knob. Inside the piece of furniture there is a dipole for the FM reception and a directable ferrite curve for the AM reception.

SEPARATE CONTROL TUNING BETWEEN AM AND FM

The device is equipped with separated tuning mechanisms for AM and FM bands and for each of the FM bands.
There is only one tuning knob but the selector changes on a cable and pulley system that are separated according to the band.
Worth noticing is the accuracy and the complexity of the motorized FM group.

Saba Freiburg 14

TUNING INDICATOR

Both the magnetic eye indicating the tuning and the one indicating the reception of a stereo station are new.

AUTOMATIC MOTORIZED TUNING

The tuning system is a masterwork.
It is a motor with windings supplied in a phase shifted by some capacitors. It permit to change the motor rotation direction of according to whether the search is in one sense or another.
The tuning is centered by drawing part of the signal from the CAC circuit and by using a relais controlled by a tube.
As already mentioned, calibration is rather complex and it cannot be put into practice without referring to SABA’s original manuals.
Below a detail of the engine and the scheme section to control the automatism.

Saba Freiburg 14
Saba Freiburg 14

VOLUME CONTROL

Another interesting feature is the volume control.
The knob does not automatically control the volume potentiometer. It controls through an unknot push-back.
The motorized remote control has a slight friction effect which strengthens the resistance when you turn the knob.

REMOTE CONTROL

Another exclusive feature is the possibility to insert the plug (see picture) in the designated back socket and remotely control the volume and tuning.

Stock Photography

LIGHTENED KEYBOARD

Another remarkable feature is the lightened keyboard.
The selected button lightens up.
The small Light bulbs are very rare and hard to be found.

MONO/STEREO SWITCH

Mono/stereo commutator does have its lightened indicators as well.
Usuallu the stereo position work only when you are listening to CDs or IPODs, but this model is equipped with a stereo decoder allowing an accurate stereophony FM reception.

The magic eye on the right side works as a modulation intensity indicator of the stations that have been received in stereophony.
The picture above shows the reception of a stereo station.

Trio-Kenwood KL333

LOUDSPEAKERS

This receiver could be coupled with any loudspeaker, equipped with a high efficiency.
If there is insufficient space for the Open Baffle, or horn loudspeaker, this can be remedied by coupling this Saba to two other favourite loudspeakers of mine.
One is the KL333, a two way Bass Reflux with horn tweeter, manufactured from the Trio-Kenwood in 1972. These loudspeakers are excellent, very pleasant and defined.
They have an efficiency of 98dB and answer infrequency nearly linear from 45 to 20.000Hz.
These loudspeakers have been designed with great care.
The Bass Reflux duct, completely eliminates the tails on the bass, the weakest point of this type of speaker.
The most interesting feature is the slant of frequency to 6400 Hz.
This slant is very high and the resulting effect is almost like that of full-range loudspeakers.
There is a great presence and precision in the localization of instruments and the voices.
Compared to the classic, full-range loudspeakers, there is a bass reinforcement thanks to the duct system and reinforcement for acute sound thanks to a horn tweeter.
With some care in the arrangement of the speakers, the resulting sound will surprise you for its freshness and depth.

CONTROL PANEL

Trio Kenwood KL-333

The first small window that can be seen on the left side indicates whether the ferrite curve is inserted and its position.
On the left side you can also find the volume control (with incorporated loudness) and the ferrite curve rotation control.
Right above the volume control there is a magic eye indicating the perfect tuning of each station.
Below you can see the Mono/Stereo indicator and further below the bass control knob.
The AM bands with Short, Medium and Long Waves and the FM displays.
Starting from the lefthand corner you can see the Musik/Sprache, Stereo/Mono, AUX input buttons, the band switch buttons, the Long, medium, short waves and FM switch buttons and the motorized tuning system (Automatik) button.

Lastly the ON button.
Next to it the acutes control knob is to be found.
The Musik/Sprache equalizer indicator.
On the right, the tuning knob, which is supported by a big fly-wheel that renders its movement really pleasant.
The automatic tuning functioning indicator is to be found on the right as well.
Above the stereo modulation indicator and below two buttons for the automatic tuning functioning. Each button activates the automatic tuning mechanism in one or the other direction. By pushing one of those buttons the engine constantly activates the tuning indicator for a fast reposition.

AEG TAMBOUR 61 STEREO

AEG TAMBOUR 61 STEREO

The original cabinet was built by AEG but the frame, electronic parts and various components derived from Telefunken even if it is the same company.
For example, the AEG Tambour 61 is the same Telefunken Concertino 2194 rebranded. The device is particular because it has different stages at medium frequency respecting all other vintage devices.
In this case the device has an MF amplifier stage and Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) which fits automatically once tuned into the station while it remains excluded during the search.

In all other devices, pressing the AFC button you get perfect tuning stability, but during the search it is only possible to receive the strongest station; conversely without pressing the AFC button it is possible to receive all the stations but the tuning is unstable.
AEG and Telefunken have developed a brilliant system to resolve this problem as explained as follows:
In FM modality, the radio reception is absolutely perfect and free from rustles.

The section of low frequency is magnificent because there are two finales in A- class equipped with a couple of ELC86.
The ELC86 are excellent vacuum tubes. The A-class does the rest.
The power, by virtue of the body of the loudspeakers at high efficiency is remarkable and the sound is very sweet and energic.

Regarding the position of the loudspeakers, the sound remains about the same, from whatever angle you listen to the device.
This makes it more enjoyable and affords the opportunity to listen to music and the programmes whilst multi – tasking.

Lastly, the furniture is shiny and in an excellent state. It is well proportioned, with innovative design and evokes the waves of a Lyra.
The vacuum tube is almost double or triple for the total amount of 17 single vacuum tubes.

HISTORY

In 1883 AEG “Allegemaine Electricitats Gesellschaft “ ( General Company of Electricity ) was born thanks to Emil Rathenau, an engineer from Berlin. He bought Edison’s lightbulb license and started to commercialize it in Germany through his company “Deutsche Edison Gesellschaft” (OEG)( German Edison Company .
In 1887 AEG presented the first electrical appliances during a World Exhibition; an iron kettle and curling tongs.
AEG became the most important electrical producer in Germany.
In 1903 AEG together with Siemans A.G founded Telefunken. The idea was to transform Telefunken into the first technology company with video - radio – electrical and military skills in Germany.
In 1907 AEG hired the architect and designer Peter Behrens as industrial engineer.
In 1911 Kaiser Guglielmo sent Telefunken’s engineers in West Sayville (New York) to build a radio tower 180 metres high. A similar tower was erected in Nauen ( Germany), creating the unique wireless communication network between North America and Europe. During construction of the tower in New York the German employees were forbidden access to the American employees in the work area.
In 1912 AEG produced the “famous Dandy” hoover and from that moment, dominated the German market with constant innovation to equip the home and professional environment.

Today, AEG belongs to the Electrolux Group.

LOUDSPEAKERS

Two front speakers emission behaviour

Each of the two front speakers has a fairly wide angle of emission.
Standing in front of the radio, centrally located, the output areas of the two loudspeakers intersect.
In monophonic listening, the acoustic feeling is to hear from a single central speaker.
But being two, the emission surface is very high, producing the same sound impact as a large woofer.
At the same time, the two front speakers, having smaller and lighter membranes and reels than a single large woofer, so they are much faster.
The low frequencies are therefore more ready and tail-free, and the range in the high frequencies is very extensive.
An expensive but highly performing choice.

TONE CONTROL

The tone control system is very efficient. Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.

KLANGREGISTER

AEG Tambour 61 Stereo

Klangregister, sound registers, are buttons that introduce the prearranged equalization curves. They are divided into two groups, on the right and on the left of the button range selection.

Bass: emphasizes the low loudness
Solo: introduces the medium loudness
Intimi : reduces the high notes
Jazz: enhances the high notes

SEPARATE CONTROL TUNING BETWEEN AM AND FM

The tuning system is another gem.
The unit is equipped with mechanisms for keeping separate the AM and FM bands.
The movement is transferred to both mechanisms with a system of pulleys and separated gears.

AFC AUTOMATICALLY EXCLUDABLE

This an exclusive feature of this device, the Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) that excludes itself automatically.

The mechanism works like this:
To tune into any FM station it is necessary to rotate the biggest knob, the one with the silver edge.
To rotate it, just press on the white small pipe the AFC, via the internal contacts of the knob, then it is possible to tune into all the stations with both the strongest and weakest signal.

As soon as you release the knob, through the same contacts, the AFC automatically inserts itself and the station is engaged at the maximum power.
Other devices do not appear to use this system. Too much expensive I suppose!
