SCHAUB LORENZ GOLDSUPER 58

Schaub-Lorenz radios are recognizable at first glance.
In the 1950s-60s the concepts of industrial standardization, of cost optimization and of inter-enterprise economies of scale did not exist.
Industrial products – not only radios, but also cars, motorbikes and domestic appliances – were characterized by great differences, at least aesthetically, from on brand to another.
It was not necessary to read the brand on the trunk in order to distinguish an Alfa Romeo from a Citroen or a NSU.
Radios were also easily distinguishable. Some maintained an austere look, some wanted to give a strong appearance of solidity, some others had eccentric and catchy shapes.

At Schaub-Lorenz, designers and developers' efforts aim for the elegance of their prestigious devices.
Schaub Lorenz Goldsuper 58, in fact, has a very elegant line. Every detail is tastefully designed with great sense of balance.
The front and the sides are designed to give great lightness to the device. There are no parallel elements or surfaces on the cabinet of this device.
Flat surfaces are minimised and the residual uniformity is completely shattered by the nuance effects that make the device look like it is moving.
The shape of this device seems to transform according to the lights and shadows around it.
Apart from my expressive skills, a simple photo array with devices of other renowned brands will clear all doubt.

GoldKlang 58 is the company's top model of the same year and GoldSuper 58 only differs from the first for the final stage.
Instead of two ECL82 in counter-phase with an output power of 5,8 w, it has an EL84 with an output power of 4,4 w.
But in the GoldSuper, the final stage works in A class, which avoids the problem of Crossover Distortion.
As usual, the sound is smooth and bright, with warm and pleasant low tones.
The loudspeakers are oversized, in fact on the Goldklang the same transducers are installed.

The tuning knob is very pleasant to use because of the peculiar pulley movement transmission system.
The keys are soft and safely activated and jam-free.

The restoration was particularly challenging because of the difficult reconstruction of the shades of the cabinet. It was laborious to recreate the precise balance between the background colour and that of the shade, as well as to respect the nuance gradient.
But the result definitely pays off.

HISTORY

In 1870, Carl Lorenz (1844-1889) opens a lightning hardware shop in Berlin.
After his death, the company is acquired by textile entrepreneur Robert Held (1862-1924).
Carl's brother, Alfred Lorenz, is appointed as technical director. Under Held, the company became an important supplier of telegraphy equipment.
The company expands in the telephone industry buying Lewart and it becomes the telephone provider for postal service.
In 1906, the company is registered for public commerce as C. Lorenz AG.
At the beginning of World War I, Lorenz had reached the number of 3.000 employees and was an important provider of telephone and telegraphy equipment for the German army.
At the end of the First War, the size of the company decreases considerably and activities are oriented to the production of household radios and aeronautical communications devices.
In the 1920's, the company is the main competitor of Telefunken.
In 1930, it is under the control of Standard Elektrizitätsgesellschaft, a branch of American society ITT.
Lorenz patented the ferrite aerial in 1935, which has been used since then in most domestic receivers.
While Germany was preparing for another War, Lorenz went back to the production of material for the army.
In 1940, he aquires G. Schaub Apparatebau-Gesellschaft; its many factories were mainly used for low-cost production.
Lorenz's military products during World War II included land and air radars, radios, recorders, radio tubes and the safest communication device in Germany, Lorenz's machine and code.
Lorenz owned the 25% of Focke-Wulf, the German aeronautical company that built some of the most successful Luftwaffe fighter jets.
In the midst of the War, Lorenz had about 24.000 workers in 12 operating structures.
In 1948, Lorenz has to start over.
Some factories had been shut down and those in the eastern part had been transferred or transferred to the Soviet Union.
During the 1950's, Lorenz recovers very quickly. In 1954, the name of the broadcasting devices brand is changed to Schaub-Lorenz.
In 1958, C. Lorenz AG ceased to exist as an independent company. ITT reorganizes its activities in Germany by merging Lorenz, Standard Elektrizitätsgesellschaft and many more into a new society, named Standard Elektrik Lorenz (or SEL).
In 1961, the company also becomes the main shareholder of Graetz.
In 1987, it is incorporated by the French company Alcatel.
In 2016, Alcatel is bought by Nokia.

Loewe Opta Bella 2711W

As previously mentioned in other reviews, one of the features I have always appreciated about Loewe-Opta radios is their refinement and beauty in terms of looks.
The Bella Luxus 2711W, one of the smallest Loewe with wooden cabinet, is certainly the most beautiful and refined among small radios.
Even being a nice and versatile piece of furniture, the Bella keeps all of the features of medium-class German radios, which hold a wide space in my passion.
Separate tuning system for AM and FM bands, using the same knob that starts separate mechanisms and indicators for the two bands.
Bandbreite Schaltbar, the keyboard with different default EQ curves.
Magical eye to indicate the perfect tuning of each station.
I am taking about the internal ferrite aerial and the complex AF stages.
The restoration work on this device was very demanding and will be described later.
As usual, sound quality is great compared to the size, also because of the stiff wooden cabinet and the remarkable quality of the alnico loudspeaker with DEW magnet. As usual, no expense is spared on quality.
A little radio with a big voice.

Grundig 4004W 4004w - cn

Grundig 4…

Grundig 4004W

GRUNDIG 4004W

Three models of Grundig 4004 have been produced.
The Grundig 4004GW, cheaper version, without power transformer and tubes filaments powered in series, UL41 output tube 4,2 Watt and a single loudspeaker.
The 4004W (EL41), middle version, with power transformer, EL41 output tube 3,9 Watt and a single loudspeaker.
La 4004W (EL12), top version, with power transformer, EL12 final 8 Watt and two loudspeakers.

In this review I analyse, clearly, the most glamorous model, the Grundig 4004W (EL12).

I begin the description anticipating the most singular and interesting peculiarity of this machine: it is perfect for the reproduction in Short Waves.
In fact, apart from having the short waves band divided into three sections, it is one of the rare commercial radios provided with RF amplifier stage for AM bands placed before the converter/mixer stage.

This device is particularly interesting as it combines some features that in other radios we only find singularly.
1) compact dimensions for the class
2) top-quality trim of the cabinet
3) great output power and sound quality
4) good number of receivable bands

Let us analyse these features in detail:

1) compact dimensions for the class: despite being unsurpassed as for the output power, in Grundig's production of 1950/51 the dimensions are relatively compact. This facilitates the location in every space.
Moreover, the controls are particularly simple, intuitive and pleasant to operate. The device is thus presented as overall amicable and a high level of familiarity is immediately established, at first blush.
2) top-quality trim of the cabinet: the wood grain is very evident and they create a fascinating movement on the surface of the cabinet.
Another accuracy, expensive and difficult to obtain is the manufacturing of light frame that enclose the cabinet. It is not painting nor glued tapes, but authentic inlays of clear wood.
This technique was abandoned by Grundig the next year, in favour of much cheaper processes for the reproduction of frames.
3) great output power and sound quality: the output stage is formed by an excellent EL12 in A class, provided with an output transformer of great size for the avoidance of saturations on lower notes. The output power is at the highest level of Grundig's production of those years, about 6W. This remarkable power is transformed into a considerable acoustic pressure by the generous Alnico loudspeaker with cast alloy basket and by the slanting cone profile. The high-pitched tones, finally, become crystalline, never too sharp, thanks to the very big electrostatic tweeter placed beside the broadband.
4) good number of receivable bands: the section in amplitude modulation of this device is very accurately designed.
In the 1950's in Short and Medium waves a great number of broadcasters was present, thanks to the ability of this wavelengths to cover significant distances.
In Grundig 4004W the short wave band is divided into three sections, completely independent.
Short waves 1, from 50,8 to 35 mt (5,9 - 8,6 MHz)
Short waves 2, from 35 to 24 mt (8,6 - 12,5 MHz)
short waves 3, from 24 a 16,7 mt (12,5 - 18 MHz)
In this way the tuning on such bands is very precise, as each band has the entire extension of the scale.
In the devices produced in the next few years the short wave band is squeezed on a single scale.

Medium waves have been divided into two sections:

Medium waves 1, from 585 to 318 mt (515 - 945 kHz)
Medium waves 2, from 321 to 185 mt (935 - 1620 kHz)

Moreover, before the oscillator/converter stage there is an Amplifier RF stage formed by an EF11. This solution will also be abandoned in the next few years due to the progressive increase in the importance of the FM band.

The FM band goes from 87,5 to 100 MHz. The installation of the Bluetooth is thus highly recommended on this device.

All of these adjustments will make these devices last over time. Nowadays, should an engineer include such adjustments, he would probably be demoted or thrown out of the company!

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tones control system is very efficient. Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.
Interesting the high-tone control knob linked to two thin ropes. One of them is for the position indicator of the control itself, whereas the other changes the position of the ferrite in the MF transformers modifying the inclination of the transformer’s curve.
By doing so high tones were attenuated/accentuated even before getting to the BF stage. Tone control was usually put into effect with the potentiometer on the voltage amplifier stage

AERIALS

Inside the cabinet there is a dipole for FM reception.
One arm of the dipole is also used for receiving AM bands.
Listening FM band the reception sensitivity with internal aerials is very good.
For AM bands using an external antenna the sensitivity is good.
The picture shows the dipole fixed internally to the cabinet.

Grundig 4004W

TUNING CONTROL

For both AM and FM bands the tuning system is unique.
The single variable capacitor is divided into 4 sections, two for AM and two for FM.
Each section is used respectively for the RF amplifier and the oscillator.
The mechanism is very simple and robust. It has the disadvantage of being a unique command for all bands.

TUNING INDICATOR

LOUDSPEAKERS

As indicated in the first description, there are two loudspeakers. They are both placed on the front.

The main broadband cone has a diameter of 22 cm. It is made of strong alloy and has an Alnico magnet.
The dimensions of the magnet are considerable and the weight of the whole loudspeaker reveals its sturdiness.
Actually, it has to sustain the solidity of the big EL12.
The curving of the cone is exponential, as it is customary in a high-quality broadband.
This cone is protected from dust by a light loosely-woven cloth, enough to make also high-pitched notes pass through.

The electrostatic tweeter covers the range of very high frequencies.
The final result is, of course, a very clear and prompt sound on high frequencies, due to the very light moving mass.

Both the loudspeakers are produced by Grundig.

CONTROL PANEL

Grundig 4004W

The magical eye, which indicates the perfect tuning of each station, is placed on the loudspeakers panel.
On the left there is the volume control (with integrated loudness).
At the beginning of its running, the potentiometer snaps because of the ignition switch.
Moving right, we find the low tones indicator on the glass display.
Then, we find the scale of Long Waves, the two of Medium Waves and the three of Short Waves and the FM band.
Finally, the high-pitched tones indicator is visible behind the glass.
Further on the right is the harmony control knob.

Below the tuning-dial is, first of all, the low-tones control knob.
Then we see the long keyboard, the buttons of which serve as, respectively:

Medium Waves 1, Medium Waves 2
Short Waves 1, Short Waves 2, Short Waves 3

Nordmende…

NORDMENDE TANNHAUSER 58

NORDMENDE TANNHÄUSER 58

Nordmende Tannhäuser 58

Tannhäuser, born into a family of knights in Salzburg, took part maybe in the sixth Crusade of 1228 and led a wandering life as a poet and a bard. He attended the court of Duke Frederick II in Vienna.
According to legend, during his life Tannhäuser found the Venusburg (mount of Venus), the subterranean reign of Venus, and lived with her for one year. He then left the goddess, full of remorse, and undertook a journey to Rome, in order to ask Pope Urban IV for forgiveness. The Pope reminded him that such sins lead to eternal damnation and promised to forgive him only in the event of a miracle: the appearance of flowers on his cane. Three days later Tannhäuser returned to Vienna and the cane bloomed.

The legend was put into music by Richard Wagner in his Tannhäuser.

Nordmende, in its heyday of technological growth, decided to name “Tannhäuser” its best device ever produced.
A device designed to represent the crest of the technical perfection of its time and extreme attention to detail.
The output stage is composed of a pair of EL84 in Push-Pull. The phase inversion is carried out with a section of the double triode ECC82 in Cathodyne configuration. This kind of inverter has an advantage, the possibility to be connected directly to its previous stage. Such stage consists of the remaining section of the double triode ECC82, which provides for the amplification of the signal after the attenuation deriving from the tone control circuit.
The triode contained in the multifunction valve EABC80 constitutes the input preamplifier and receives a signal from a logarithmic potentiometer with 3 intermediate sockets for a complex and very accurate physiological volume control circuit.

The radio section is of the same high quality. An additional medium frequency stage is present, in order to increase the selectivity.
This allows the receipt of transmissions, especially in FM, particularly stable and free from disturbance.

The complex of loudspeakers, moreover, is really impressive. All the loudspeakers are made by Isophon.
The reproduction of low and medium frequencies is ensured by a big elliptic woofer P 2031/19/105 which measures 31 cm in length and 20 in height.
To trebles, instead, are dedicated 4 loudspeakers built with 3 different technologies.
Frontally, we can find the famous cone tweeter HM 10/12/70 for a soft reproduction, perfectly integrated with that of the woofer. The trumpet exit of a DKS 6/13/100 and an electrostatic tweeter ST HB7 were put on each side.

As Baudelaire wrote, the Tannhäuser represents the struggle between the two principles which choose the human heart as their battlefield, that is the flesh against the spirit.
Nordmende honoured this great piece of work with the realisation of its best product.

HISTORY

In 1923 Otto Hermann Mende founded Radio H. Mende & Co. in Dresden. After the bombing of the factory in 1945, Martin Mende (son of the founder) created a new company in Bremen, the "North German Mende Broadcast GmbH" whose name was later changed into NORDMENDE.

In the 50s and 60s it became one of the most prestigious German TV and radios manufacturer.

In the 70s the televisions by NORDMENDE became famous for their frames, cards and for the rigorous testing and quality controls carried out on their finished products. Unfortunately, the high cost involved in such detailed quality determined a competitive disadvantage when the price of color television began to fall.

In 1977 the majority of the shares was sold to the French Thomson. The following year, the family sold the remaining shares. In 1980, the factories of Bremen was closed, NORDMENDE becoming purely a trademark of Thomson.

BANDBREITE SCHALTBAR

The frequency response correction system is made of 6 keys that insert preset equalization curves operating on the feedback circuit, they are not passive filters.
This solution was adopted only on the upper class models.

The Bass key emphasizes the bass.
The Sprache key emphasizes the mids for a cleaner listening to broadcasts spoken.
The Horspiel key leaves the control to the tone knobs.
The Orchester key puts in the flat passband.
The Solo key slightly accentuates the mids to encourage listening to individual instruments.
The Jazz key emphasizes the very low and high tones to encourage listening to this kind of music.

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tones control system is very efficient.

Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.

AERIALS

Inside the cabinet there is a dipole for FM reception and a ferrite rotating aerial for AM reception.
Ferrite aerial can be rotated from the outside to achieve a perfect tuning of the device in the AM.
In this picture see the rotation mechanism and the position indicator of the aerial.

The reception sensitivity with internal aerials is very good. This unit was in fact produced in a period when there were not many radio stations and those available fairly apart from each others.
Using an external aerial sensitivity is further increased.

SEPARATE CONTROL TUNING BETWEEN AM AND FM

The tuning system is another gem.
The unit is equipped with mechanisms for keeping separate the AM and FM bands.
The tuning knob is single but a selector switch commutes into cable systems (all in steel) and pulleys separated depending on the band.

The movement is transferred to both mechanisms with a system of pulleys and separated gears.

LOUDSPEAKERS

The loudspeakers are five.

In the front we find the biggest elliptic broadband built by Isophon, very linear and efficient. Also frontally, we find an Isophon cone tweeter.
In order to obtain a 3D effect, we find on the sides a huge trumpet tweeter with two outputs and two electrostatic SuperTweeters.

The acoustic performance is really generous.

None of the radios I know has the same dotation of loudspeakers.

CONTROL PANEL

Nordmende Tannhauser 58

Above the dial, in the loudspeakers panel we find the series of buttons of the Bandbreite Schltbar, previously described.
Moving downwards on the tuning-dial, we first find the magical eye, which indicates the perfect tuning of each station. Below, we find the volume control (with integrated loudness).
By pulling the volume knob, the circuit which powers selectivity in the AM bands is inserted.
From the top down are then indicated the AM dial for Long, Medium and Short bands and below we find the FM dial.
Moving further right, we find the indicator of the position of the ferrite aerial.
Finally, there is the tuning knob, which movement is very pleasant as it is supported by a big flywheel.
Coaxial to the harmony knob is the knob which rotates the ferrite aerial.
Below on the left we find the treble control knob set in a nice bakelite casing with ivory effect.

In the following order, then, we find the buttons:

AUS - Off
TA - Turntable
TONBAND - Tape recorder
L - Long Wave
Peil-Ant - Ferrite antenna for LW and MW
M - Medium Wave
K - Short Wave
UKW - FM

On the right, the bass control is visible.
Above the tone controls, the respective emphasis indicators of the controls.

Saba Frei…

SABA FREIBURG WIII

Saba Freiburg WIII

Saba Freiburg WIII is the company's flagship model in 1953. In that year, only Grundig 5050 could compete with Saba Freiburg in terms of sound quality.
No other device was provided with concentric loudspeakers and, at the same time, with the 2 x EL84 (6BQ8) push-pull power amplifier.
The sound performance is very satisfying in both devices. The tweeter aligned with the woofer plays voices and solo instruments with unsuspecting brightness and presence.
With the second reinforcing woofer, the depth of the bass is inspiring and the holding power is also remarkable.
We are talking about actual 7W which, with such powerful loudspeakers, enough for large places.
The solution of concentric loudspeakers, unfortunately, was not adopted for the devices subsequently created both by Saba and Grunding, but it was later taken up by Graetz for some of its top-of-the-rang models.
Now, it is one of the most adopted solutions in Hi-End speakers.

In the radio section, three peculiarities can be underlined:

  • the Muting button
By pushing this button, the FM stations search becomes very quiet. The noise and interferences that are normally heard while moving from one station to another in the research phase are quietened. The Tuning Indicator decreases its sensitivity in the interval between two stations, regaining automatically the maximum sensitivity as soon as it gets closer to the station. A pleasant and exclusive refinement.
  • KW-Lupe
When listening to broadcasts in the short wave band, tuning is often difficult because of the small bandwidth. It only takes a slight movement of the knob to lose the station. In order to solve this problem, Saba drew up the tuning precision control in Short Waves (KW-Lupe). This is how it works: press button K to select the Short Wave band. Tune to a radio station through the big knob of AM bands. Finally, refine the tuning by turning the small knob of the FM band, which in this case works as precision tuning for Short Waves.
  • ORT-S.
It is possible to store a radio station in Medium Waves and rename it simply by pushing the ORT-S button. The storing mechanism is very simple. Press button ORT-S. Under the radio there is a hole with a screw. By turning that screw with a screwdriver, it is possible to tune to the favourite station. From this moment, every time the button ORT-S will be pushed it will tune to the preset station. In order to listen to other broadcasts in Medium Waves, it will be necessary to just push the button M and use normally the big tuning knob.

As usual for German companies, the series name, Freiburg in this case, is maintained throughout the years, even if the models produced are very different from each other. Among the devices of the Freiburg series, the WIII model has unique features. The previous models do not have the same tone controls, the next models lack the concentric loudspeakers. They have other features, equally interesting... but not these.

HISTORY

SABA is the acronym for Schawarzwälder-Apparate-Bau-Anstalt meaning engineering institute of Technological appliances of the Black Forest.

The company was founded back in 1835 by Joseph Benedikt with the initial name of Jockele-Uhren, but only in 1923 the production of radio devices began and the company went under the name of SABA.
Toward the end of the 20s SABA became famous with the well-known S35 and in the following years it became the second German producer after Telefunken. During the war SABA produced military equipment and in 1945 the company was completely destroyed by a bombing.
In 1947 the production of radio devices began again and SABA distinguished itself immediately for ist avant-garde and high- quality production.

hey also began to produce TVs (the first PAL color TV is a SABA), house appliances and medical equipment. Many Italians used to work there. The Alnico Greencone loudspeakers became popular for their linearity, power handling, constant impendence that would be employed in each Hi-Fi devices of that time.

The radio devices with motorized tuning became popular as well and SABA became the representative German brand meaning quality, reliability and detailed precision. In the 1970s the decline began. According to specialized magazines of that time not having a Japanese device at that time meant not having Hi-Fi. In the 80s Thompson took over SABA. In the 90s the other way around, having a Japanese device of the 70s meant not having Hi-Fi. They found out that they functioned with a 96% counterreaction and that a device with 0.001 db from 1 to 100 KHz extension did not necessarily sound good.

We do not trust our ears and we do trust what other people say not necessarily with a good purpose.
2007: due to insolvency SABA disappeared from the TLC (Chinese) and Thompson (French) joint venture, and SABA ceased to exist.

LOUDSPEAKERS

The loudspeaker polar diagram.

This is an example of polar diagram of a coaxial loudspeaker. The different lines show the sound intensity at the angle and frequency change. It's evident the minor directionality of low frequencies respect to those high.
We studied the positioning of the two loudspeaker to obtain the best response at a distance of 3 up to 6 meters.

To avoid pointless words, you have to listen to the result.

TONE CONTROLS

The tone control system is peculiar. It is a Baxandall configuration system with a particular feature, it interacts with the feedback system. This ensures an effective control of the band providing at the same time a reduction of distortion. The use, anyway, is very simple, as we can find the usual tone control knobs at the sides of the display. The colour of windows on the display progressively changes with the rotation of each knob. In this way, it is possible to get an impression of how much tones have been enhanced.

Imperial …

IMPERIAL I350W STEREO

IMPERIAL I350W STEREO

The first approach to the Imperial I350W Stereo is visual. And it has a lot of curb appeal.
The cabinet has a really good appearance. Every detail is designed with good taste.
The soft curves and the inclination of the front part make the cabinet look lean, while it is actually very sturdy.
The shades create a series of contrasts of light and shadow which further lighten the shape of the cabinet. The shades, moreover, reveal an ancient craftsmanship.
Finally, there needs to be a “family look”, represented by three peculiar golden pointy segments.

The restoration of a cabinet with such features is very difficult. In order to reproduce the shades it is necessary to perform rigorously several sequenced steps.
In case of mistake it is necessary to strip paint off the cabinet and start over.
The final result is impressive, the cabinet is very shiny and its shaded edges draw attention to it, no matter where the cabinet is located in the room.

What strikes most about the sound is the clarity of the medium-high part. This feature can be verified by listening to the recordings on the Compilation page.
Bass frequencies are very fast, with a good transient response, as they are reproduced by two elliptical loudspeakers, rather than by a very big one.
This device is specifically suitable for the reproduction of vocal music and electronic instruments.

The tuning is stable and also in the AM bands there is significant sensitivity.

Its only oddity is in the name Stereo, deriving from the use of two loudspeakers located at the sides, but the device is not really stereophonic as we understand it.

HISTORY

In 1923, long before the official launch of broadcasting in Germany, a little crew of specialists began AG in Staßfurt the development and production of radio devices.
At that time, workforce barely reached 20 people, but soon after the introduction of broadcasting in Germany, the number of employees grew to 400.
In 1927, more than 25.000 radios and a lot of components had been produced.
In 1928 it was the first German company to launch the superheterodyne receiver into the market.
The production of IMPERIAL receivers, which become known by the name “"Staßfurter Imperial", is started.
The products of this company quickly gain excellent reputation and sales increase to such an extent that the number of employees rises up to 600 in 1932.
In 1938 a more modern factory is built, of about 7000 square meters besides administration buildings and laboratories.
In 1939 the production increases and the number of employees rises up to 850.
During the war, the production of civil radio is interrupted, to make room to that of communication devices for Wehrmacht.
Another warehouse of 6000 square meters is built and the number of employees increases to 1700.
After the end of the War the company is expropriated but, thanks to the staff's strong persistence, the production is restarted.
In 1947, another company is created in Osterode / Harz under the name Continental Rundfunk GmbH.
In 1955 the number of employees rises up from 100 to over 500.
In 1958 the company is taken over by Gerhard Kubetschek, owner of KUBA, to whom the know how of the Continental Rundfunk are transferred.
The story of Kuba... is another story.

Two beautiful Isophon elliptical loudspeakers are located on the front, in a reclining position towards the sides.
On the sides there is an opening.
In this way the sound is perfectly audible both frontally and laterally.
Put to the test, this solution is better than the classical lateral positioning of the tweeters, as in this way the whole audible band is reproduced laterally, not only high frequences.

The loudspeakers are supported frontally by an efficient electrostatic loudspeaker.

The result is a very clean sound, especially in the listening of liquid music through bluetooth.

PHILIPS CAPELLA 753/4E/3D

PHILIPS CAPELLA 753/4E/3D

The Philips Capella 753/4E/3D was the company’s flagship model back in 1955, but in reality, the brand was working towards making it the best piece of technology to come out of Germany, blowing away the competition.

As a matter of fact, they met their goal and produced a unique piece of technology, for both the German and World Wide market.
It’s peculiarities are:

  • A motorized Tuning
  • 6 memorizable stations
  • 4 power tubes (2xEL84 and 2xUL84)
  • Dedicated amps for Hi and Low frequencies
  • An Iron-Free coupling output (OTL)
  • High Damping Factor with Negative Feedback circuit
  • 4 High impedance speakers

Even though the Philips Capella 753/4E/3D boasts a noticeable size, it’s woodwork, frames, and speaker covers contribute in giving it a much sleeker, eye-pleasing look to complete any furniture display.
The Low frequencies are particularly deep thanks to the separated OTL amplifiers and to the impressive size of the subwoofer, approximately 26cm in diameter (more or less 30 inches).
I suggest making good use of the mid-tweeter, as this successfully crafted speaker (17 cm in diameter) makes the mid and Hi frequencies pleasant and true to life, especially if seated in front of the Machine.

High and Mid Frequencies sections
The FM group is of the variable permeability type.
It has a high amplification and stability. Being equipped with an automatic noise suppressor in the presence of signals below 1.7 V, the output is muted to avoid hearing rustling and noise when searching for stations.
The de-emphasis circuit is set to 50 uS, valid all over the world except for the USA and South Korea. In these countries, the filter should be increased to 75 uS.

The AM section is equipped with a rotating antenna for the OM and OL bands. The antenna can be controlled by a knob on the front.
The mid-frequency sections are composed of three separate filters for AM and FM. The first of these filters is adjustable. The second is the amplifier filter and the third filter further increases the selectivity of the device.

The Motorized Tuning and the amplifier section are examined in detail in the following sections.

All the listed solutions translate into a very low distortion, an increase in power, and a pleasantness of use hardly ever obtained in other appliances.

Philips Capella 753/4E/3D

AMPLIFIERS

The preamplifier consists of two stages. At the entrance, the volume potentiometer is equipped with three sockets for physiological correction (loudness). The intervention curves are visible in the first graph.
Philips considers the frequency of 800 Hz to be the center of the audible band, so the treble and bass controls are calculated to enhance the frequencies above and below that value. The choice of this frequency is very important for the musicality and the pleasantness perceived by listening to the device.
In the second graph the frequency response of the preamplifier, with the tones enhanced to the maximum. You notice the different equalization you get by listening to the AM bands (Long Waves, Medium, Short) or listening to the FM band and PHONO.

The final stages are two distinct, one for the low frequencies and one for the high frequencies. These amplifiers control separate speakers, a 26 cm woofer for the bass and three speakers for mid/high frequency, with the 17 cm front speaker disconnectable for 3D effect.
The most interesting feature of these final stages is that they are without an output transformer.

The feature that makes this device very interesting is that each final stage uses a pair of EL84 / UL84 in an ironless configuration, ie without an output transformer (the known critical point of the final stage).
The output stage uses the operating principle called Shunt Regulated Push-Pull (SRPP) used today in HIGH-END amplifiers.
The output transformer limits the bandwidth of the entire amplifier. The bass is limited by the inductance of the primary winding, the treble is limited by the parasitic capacitance resulting from the alternation of the primary and secondary windings. The alternating winding of the primary and the secondary windings is also necessary to improve the coupling and thus reduce the dispersed flow.
The reduction of the dispersed flow increases the damping. This is essential in the loudspeakers mounted inside the cabinet of the radios, which do not work in hermetically closed boxes, and which are therefore free to move almost without resistance from the surrounding air.

The two output tubes (EL84, UL84) of each channel, four final valves in total, are connected in series with DC-DC coupling. Each UL84 is configured as a triode.
The output is taken from the cathode of the UL84. The speaker has an impedance of 800 ohms, identical to the average impedance that occurs on the catode, whereby direct coupling (without transformer) is possible between the final stage and the loudspeaker.
The Philips Capella 753 is therefore totally free of all the problems deriving from the output transformers.

The damping of the loudspeakers is kept high by the low dynamic resistance of the feedback loop.

MOTORIZED TUNING AND PRESET MEMORY

Another feature of the Philips Capella 753/4E/3D is motorized tuning and preset memory.
Using 6 keys on the keyboard it is possible to memorize 3 FM stations, 2 in Medium Waves and 1 in Long Waves.
Pressing one of the storage keys via a cable pulls the lever H. The opposite side of that lever is pushed towards the disk R. This disk is divided into two parts with different diameters. Depending on how the disc is positioned, the lever H moves by activating a switch that turns the motor to the right or left until the lever H is fitted on the groove on the disc R. At this point, the motor stops. The R disks are rigidly connected to the axis A1 and through frictions to the R disk.

Tuning procedure

When a memory key is pressed, the motor will start to turn to the right or left according to the above.
Through the gears, Z1, Z2, Z4, Z5 the axis A1 is turned. Through the gears, Z6, Z7 the variable capacitor is rotated, which stops when the lever H engages in the groove of R.
To memorize a station, simply press the button on which it is to be stored, pull the tuning knob and turn it to the desired station.

TONE CONTROL WITH LEVEL INDICATION

The tones control system is very efficient.
Above the large tone control knobs there is two bands that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.
The high-tone control knob is linked to two thin ropes. One of them is for the position indicator of the control itself, whereas the other changes the position of the ferrite in the MF transformers modifying the its curve.
By doing so high tones were attenuated/accentuated even before getting to the BF stage.

LOUDSPEAKERS

The 28 cm loudspeaker, with a 25 mm diameter magnetic core, is placed at the front.
A front 17 cm mid-tweeter can also be switched off if you want to increase the 3D effect.
On the two sides, there are two elliptical tweeters pointing upwards. Radiating to the ceiling of the room to take advantage of the reflections of the environment that add to the direct radiation produce an expansion of the soundstage.
There are no dangers of stationary wave due to the working frequency of these speakers.

There are several options for connecting external speakers.
It is, in fact, possible to connect an external woofer, excluding or not the internal woofer while leaving all the other speakers active.
It is possible to connect external medium-high units, excluding or not the internal mid-tweeters, while leaving the internal woofer active.
It is possible to connect woofers and external medium-high units, excluding or not all, or some, internal speakers.

AEG 6077/3D

AEG's story is needed to understand that the cabinet is designed and built by AEG, the chassis, electronics and all components come from the Telefunken factories. Infact all components are branded Telefunken.
Obviously, it is practically the same company.

In particular the AEG 6077 is a Telefunken Concertino with a different cabinet.
After the calibration this receiver has an exceptional sensitivity in Medium and Short Waves, so much so that it looks like a radio amateur or military receiver.
In FM mode the sound signal is faultless and free from rustles.

Since I have already made a review for the Concertino 8, I will illustrate the cabinet of the radio because it is markedly different with respect to the Telefunken radio.

The cabinet is robust as you can perceive from its weight.
It has been built with 12 mm of real wood, exactly the triple thickness of a Gelasso radio, given to me by a friend to make a calibration.
In addition, this cabinet has rounded and harmonious shapes which makes it very elegant.
There is no square cut even in the side grille frames.

The loudspeakers are protected by durable canvas, that even after 50 years, does not even have one scratch.
Control knobs, frames, brass everything has a high quality and these elements are chosen with extreme attention to detail.

Undoubtedly an example of what uncompromising teutonic quality means.

Emil Rathenau

HISTORY

AEG "Allgemeine Electricitäts Gesellschaft" was founded in 1883 by the engineer Emil Rathenau in Berlin. He purchased Edison's bulb license to market it to Germany through the company he founded under the name ' Deutsche Edison Gesellschaft '' (DEG) (German Edison Company).

In 1887 AEG introduced the first home appliances during a World Exhibition: Iron, kettle for the tea, curls hair. AEG quickly became Germany's leading manufacturer of home appliances, unbeknownstically integrating its name into the tradition of German quality.
In 1907 AEG hired the architects and designers Peter Behrens as an industrial designer.
In 1912 it produced the famous 'Dandy' vacuum cleaner, and since then AEG will provide the German market with a continuous revolution and innovation in home and office equipment.

In 1903 AEG together with Siemens A.G. founded TELEFUNKEN with the intention of making it the leading technology company with Germany's video-radio-electronic and military skills.
In 1911, Kaiser Guglielmo sent Telefunken engineers to West Sayville (New York) to erect a 180-meter radio tower. A similar tower was erected in Nauen (Germany), creating the only wireless communication network between North America and Europe. During the construction of the tower in New York, German workers denied access to the area of work for American staff.

Now AEG belongs to the Electrolux group.

Philips U…

PHILIPS URANUS TONMEISTER B7D52AS

PHILIPS URANUS TONMEISTER B7D52AS

Philips products in Italy have always been a little ignored in the HI-FI world: they were linked to the other thousands of low technological content products, appliances, consumer products and so on that this producer has made through the years.

Giorgio Vasari – La mutilazione di Urano da parte di Crono, XVI secolo – Palazzo Vecchio, Firenze

Nothing more wrong and superficial.
Philips is a manufacturer with a huge know-how. One of the best tuners in the world comes from them, the AH673.
One of the most broadband speakers in the world the AD9710 comes from them.
Even the invention of the compact cassette and then of the Cds comes from them.
They made maybe the best CD mechanism in the world, the CDM1, the first DVD recorder, the technology of the devices produced from a certain date with the Grundig, Marantz, B&O and other marks.
So, who snubs Philips does it for lack of knowledge.

Presented the manufacturer, let's talk now about the machine.

In greek mithology, Uranus god of the sky, Gaia's husband, threw his children in the bowels of the earth as long as they born to avoid their supremacy. Gaia, horrified, made for her 12th son, the titan Cronus, the adamantine sickle. Cronus evirated Uranus and from his genitals thrown in the sea was born Aphrodite.
Probably in the choice of the name at the Philips headquarters refered to the magnitude of the divinity, but it's a fact that the Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS is one of the best tube receivers ever made by this manufacturer.
Built to compete with Telefunken Opus, Nordmende 3004, Grundig Stereomeister, owes the second part of its name “Tonmeister – Master of Sound” surely to the care it has been studied with, in any detail.

The output stages are made of couples of pentodes in Push-Pull with Voltage Negative Feedback without frequency correction. In this way it is ensured the maximum linearity with the less compression effect possible, undesireable effect typical of the Negative Feedback circuits. Other manufacturers made other choices and this determines the different personality of these devices.
The Philips by this point of view distinguishes for its timbre neutrality.
The pre-amplifier stage is provided with many equalization possibilities but I prefere to listen excluding them: I don't feel the necessity with these loudspeakers there's no acoustic deformation to correct.

The radio-frequency stage is of a very high level and classical setting provided with excludable AFC. Interesting the typical little IF transformers, difficult to de-tare and insensitive to fashes.

Even in this case I matched for this try-out the Uranus with its cousin Marantz CD94 MKII, wonderful machine with CDM1 component and a pair of TDA1541A in antiphase, one of the best existing machines, and to a pair of Cabasse Dinghy 222, high efficiency speakers described later.

The stations stay perfectly stable thanks to the AFC, so the listening of the tuner is very relaxing. The listening from the CD or other sources is timbrically very balanced.
Listening from an Ipod is possible and comfortable.

Even in this case its an authentic vintage Hi-Fi System with no compromises, for those who know exactly what they are buying.

- Separate loudspeakers - Using separate loudspeakers is an important option for stereo receivers. This allows you to couple the receiver to speakers best suited to particular space, design or acoustic performance requirements. The most suitable loudspeakers are analysed later, under loudspeakers.

- Stereo Decoder - The device has an integrated Stereo Decoder. This allows you to listen to stations that use this transmissions system in stereo. Many stereo receivers are not equipped with a Multiplexer so they work in stereo only when you select the record player’s /Recorder/Aux input . Such receivers, in listening to the radio, send the same signal to both channels, so listening is monaural. This is not the case with the Concertino 2380, which is totally beyond stereo.

- Built-in Bluetooth receiver - This unit can be equipped with a BLUETOOTH receiver powered directly from the device. That makes it possible to use the amplifier from any digital device, IPAD, Smartphone, or sophisticated multimedia station. You can listen to your wireless Web Stations or favorite music around the room. On request, we can also mount a Wireless Receiver.

- Multi Platform connections - Along with the device, we can also provides you an impedance adapter cable to connect any digital source, such as iphone, smartphone, computer, CD player, etc. This purpose-built cable adapts different impedances of modern digital equipment. Also the two stereo channels are collected into a single flow without increasing the load input unit.

HISTORY

Rotating ferrite aerial for AM bands

Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS
Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS

OUTPUT POWER STAGE

The output stage has been already briefly described in the introduction of the machine, its a clasic Push-Pull in AB class that produces an 8W power per channel.

The interesting fact is the load resistence that excludes automatically when the speakers' jacks are plugged in, avoiding the overload of the final stadium in case of powering it up without speakers connected.

AERIALS

The device is equipped with two aerials. A ferrite for AM ranges and a wire loaded for the FM range.

Listening to AM was already considered unimportant at the time, outlined by FM features.

Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS
Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS

BANDBREITE SCHALTBAR

The correction system of the frequency response, quite antiquate command in such a machine but at the top those years, is made of three buttons that instert three pre-defined equalization curves.
I prefere to listen with the “Jazz” button switched.

TONE CONTROLS

The tone control system is very efficient. Above the large tone control knobs there is a band that lights up gradually indicating the emphasis on the band on which it acts.

Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS

SEPARATE CONTROL TUNING BETWEEN AM AND FM

The unit is equipped with mechanisms for keeping separate the AM and FM bands.
The movement is transferred to both mechanisms with a system of pulleys and separated gears.

TUNING INDICATOR

Another exclusive detail, this device is provided with 2 magic eyes. The first, on the left indicates when and with what power we are receiving a stereo channel. The second, on the right, indicates the tuning of each station.
Both the magic eyes are new.

Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS

AUTOMATIK BUTTON

The Automatik button is the one of the AFC that permits to maintain always perfectly tuned a station once tuned in.
That is not to be used during the research of the station, otherwise the receiver would concentrate only on the most powerful stations.
Once tuned-in the prefered station pressing this button the receiver will correct automatically possible frequency skiddings, keeping always perfectly tuned.

CONTROL PANEL

Coaxially, we find the balance knob.
The magic eye that indicates the presence of a stereo station.
Going on, we find the AM scale for the Long, medium, and short waves and the FM scale.
Furher on the right we find the tuning knob.

The magic eye that indicates the perfect tuning of each station.
Below we find in the order: bass controls, on and off buttons, the three EQ buttons, the mono/stereo button, and the selection of the inputs buttons (Turntable, Recorder/CD, AFC, long medium short waves, FM)
We find in the end the treble control.

Philips Uranus Tonmeister B7D52AS

LOUDSPEAKERS

I used the Dinghy 221 and 222, prefering the last ones even if more expensive, because they keep almost every feature of the single-driver (the woofer is cut at 5000 Hz) with an extension, on the tops and on the lows that the 221 can only dream.

Because of the crossover the efficiency is lower than 2db but still remains very high, settling at 96db.

This feature allows the Telefunken to be used normally at a fraction of its real power, for the benefit of linearity.
The Dinghy sound very fast despite the appearence, the string instruments come out of the speakers with an effortlessness that makes them get close to the Open Baffle.

The loudspeakers are of very high quality, made on Cabasse detailed bill.
The cabinet is well finished and its dimensions are incredibly limited for the performance they offer.
The material published is taken from the very interesting trans-apline forum dedicated to this prestigious brand: vedi

Telefunke…

TELEFUNKEN MUSIKUS 5SV

TELEFUNKEN MUSIKUS 5SV

The Telefunken Musikus 5SV is one of the best portable record players built in Germany between 1960-1961.
The mechanical part is comprised of a robust Telefunken belt record player.
The record player is equipped with automatic antiskating set at the factory. It can play discs at 16/33/45/78 rpm.
It is not automatic for which the mechanics are very simple, robust and silent.
It can assemble monophonic or stereo stylus.
The electronics are established from an ECL82 polarized in A-Class.
The triode section of the ECL82 is used as a preamplifier. Between the preamplifier stage and the final stage there are separate tone controls for acute and bass.
Interestingly, the physiological control of the volume consists in three separate levels which intervenes in succession to the volume decreasing.
That physiological control is applied to both potentiometer sections. Another important feature is the ability to connect to an external amplifier, with its loudspeaker, to listen in stereophonic mode.
The traditional use is to connect the output of this record player to the input of a radio.
It is enough to turn the stylus and the Stereo/Mono switch to the Stereo position.
In this way, one channel will be audible from the loudspeaker of the portable record player, the other channel will be audible from the radio’s loudspeaker.
Activating the volume knob of the portable record player, it will act simultaneously on both channels.
The tone controls of the two devices remain separate and independent.
The listening in Mono does not require any additional equipment.

The sound is typical, substantial, sweet and obviously relaxing.
The acute tones are brilliant and the bass is quite quietly present …..within the limits imposed by the laws of physics.

A beautiful portable stereo player with the final stage “Single Ended” in A-Class, enclosed in very refined furniture.
An object which you can enjoy the transmissions of times past.

HISTORY

1903 To prevent the English Marconi Company from having a monopoly on wireless transmissions,,Kaiser Wilhelm II orders the company AEG and Siemens to set up a joint venture to develop wireless telegraphy in Germany. It was established under the name of Gesellschaft für drahtlose Telegrafen mbH.

1923 The company name is changed to Firmierung in Telefunken, Gesellschaft für drahtlose Telegrafen mbH. Abbreviated as Telefunken, where Tele means Telegraph and Funken means "Lightning" in the sense of being fast and immediate.

1930 Production gradually moves from military and Government equipment to the production of consumer appliances. During this period, Telefunken enters the market of radio-television, recorders and etching of records.

1930 As radio transmissions are now needed not only to transmit telegraph messages, but also true music and speech broadcasts, it becomes necessary to introduce the concept of sound compression, to avoid continual volume level changes of the radio. Telefunken designs and produces the U3, the first compressor for transmitting stations in the world,. TheU73b, as seen in the picture, represents the evolution of previous models—it allows you to change the compression level, the release times and the attack times.

1941 All Telefunken’s actions are transferred to AEG, which effectively becomes the sole owner of the trademark Telefunken, its factories and patents.

1948 Germany is not invited to the Copenhagen Conference, where the division of Medium and Short Wave radio frequencies of Central Europe is decided. The war has just ended, and officially Germany isn't considered as a technologically important nation. Because of this, Germany decides to develop FM broadcasts even if the quality of the transmissions is considerably higher than those in the AM. At this time, Telefunken develops the V72 microphone/amplification system and its evolutions, intended to be used in all German broadcasters and most European ones too, as well as at the most important recording studios, such as EMI, Decca, Telefunken, etc.

1955 The company becomes Telefunken GmbH.

1967 Telefunken is joined with AEG and the company becomes ‘’AEG-Telefunken’’.

1970 Poor management causes the company to lose market shares. AEG begins to outsource entire business segments and make constant rearrangements.

1985 Daimler-Benz AG buys what remains of AEG-Telefunken.

1996 The name Telefunken is cleared and all activities related to audio products stop.

Today The company name has been renewed in Telefunken Holding AG. Telefunken and its use worldwide are responsible for the name. In United States Telefunken USA buys the rights to build and market worldwide original microphones and some audio equipment under the brand Telefunken Elektroakustik.
The original company that helped spread the music throughout the world doesn’t exist anymore.

LOUDSPEAKER

The loudspeaker of this device is very interesting.
Since it has been placed on the top of the lid of the cabinet, it has been necessary to contain the depth.
To do this, the magnet and the reel have been moved to the front of the speaker, in front of the cone.
The cone curvature is also minimized.
With these clever solutions the depth has been limited to a few inches.
The frequency response of a loudspeaker with the profile is shifted to the acute, which is really brilliant.
The cabinet built on the lid, allows the low range to be emphasized, so at the end the frequency response is rather linear.

TONE CONTROLS

Another important feature, that reveals the class of this device, is the tone control circuit, which consists of two separate sections for high and low frequencies.

Somewhat different to the circuits usually used in German production, here the controls are independent from the volume control position.

These controls act naturally only on the internal amplifier, not on that additional amplifier.

Telefunken Musikus 5SV
Telefunken Musikus 5SV

SOCKET FOR EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER

In the photo, on the left you can see the 3 poles DIN socket, to which it is possible to connect an additional amplifier, as specified in the presentation of the device.

When the switch is in the Mono position (a circle) on both amplifiers the internal one and the additional one, the same signal arrives.

When the switch is in the Stereo position (two circles) to the two amplifiers the signal arrives separately in the two channels. This is controlled by the volume potentiometer which consists of two equal sections.

MAIN CONTROLS

Telefunken Musikus 5SV

The first command you can see to the left is the voltage changer. It should only be used at the beginning to adjust the voltage of the record players’ operation to that of the network.
Then, it must no longer be touched.
The second command is the control of low tones of the internal amplifier, to follow the potentiometer of the volume (of both channels)(di entrambi i canali)

and finally, the acute tones control knob.
Above you can see the big knob of the speed control of the record player.
At the end, the Mono/Stereo switch and the output for an additional amplifier.
